Ensign Plaza

Ensign Plaza - Challenge

CHALLENGE

Ensign Plaza was the first major project LCG Façades took on as a new entity. This project was especially challenging because the original concept by MHTN Architects was for both the exterior stone façade and the curtain wall system to be unitized. For reasons due to cost, the decision was made to go forward with a hand set stone in lieu of a “strong-back” unitized stone, this along with a perimeter Z shaped flashing concept that was found to be unworkable made this project very challenging.

The first issue that had to be addressed was the Z shaped flashing, that became known as the “Do-Dad” during one our design meeting when we were trying to figure out how that shape could work effectively as a perimeter flashing.

Second, because a hand set stone option was selected, the stone subcontractor was obligated to set his stone from scaffolding. This created an obstacle LCG needed to work around in order to gain access. Our unitized pre-assembled and glazed curtain walls required setting with an automated multi-head suction cup attached to a crane from the exterior needless to say the access was very limited.
